Chapter Eleven

Payton was working in her office when the front desk called to let her know she’d received a delivery. Protocol demanded that outside deliveries had to remain at the front reception desk and must be picked up by the recipient on her way out the door. Nothing, no matter how innocuous, was allowed past the security checkpoint.

“Thanks, I’ll come by on my way out.” She hung up and wondered who would be sending her flowers. Mara knew not to send anything to the office, and she wouldn’t send flowers anyway.

She put the thought behind her and finished reviewing the report Vincent had submitted regarding the progress with the LA investigation. The team had picked up some local chatter about an impending attack. They had identified three individuals and tracked their travels through several stops back to an origin in Russia. The local FBI field office currently had them under surveillance and were sure they would have the suspects in custody prior to the Academy Awards ceremony that weekend.

At 1400, Payton packed up her laptop and decided to sneak out an hour early. She stopped by the front desk on her way out and was surprised to see the flower arrangements with a teddy bear attached to the side of the bright yellow basket. She double-checked the name on the card to make sure there was no mistake, then picked up the arrangement. She waited until she reached her car before she pulled the card from the small envelope. Her eyes narrowed as she read it.

The bear holds very fond memories.
